Small group personal training vs a regular gym: what's the difference?

By Full Range Fitness · 1 November 2026

If you have been weighing up a regular gym membership against small group personal training, you are not alone. They look similar on paper — both have kit, both let you train more than once a week — but the experience is quite different. This post explains what sets them apart, and why so many people around Eastbourne and Hailsham choose the coached route at our studio in Polegate.

What a regular gym usually looks like

A regular gym is, for the most part, a room full of equipment that you can use for a monthly fee. You walk in, choose what to do, and get on with it. There may be staff on hand and the odd induction, but the planning, the pacing and the progression are down to you. For people who already know what they are doing and want the freedom to train on their own, that can work well. For everyone else, it can be a lonely and slightly bewildering experience — one where it is easy to drift, lose motivation, or never quite feel sure whether what you are doing is right for you.

What small group personal training actually is

Small group personal training keeps the group feel of a class but adds the coaching of one-to-one personal training. At Full Range Fitness, every session is one hour and led by a coach, and the group is small enough that the coach can see how you are moving, adjust each exercise to your level, and move you on as you progress. You are not copying the person next to you or guessing at a machine. The workout is set for the group, but tailored to you on the day.

We run over 100 of these sessions a week, from early morning to evening, so there is a time that fits around your week — and every one of them is booked through our app.

Why the difference matters for beginners

If you are new to training, or coming back after a long break, the difference is felt almost immediately. In a regular gym, you have to work out what to do before you can start doing it. In a small group personal training session, someone has already done that thinking for you.

Our sessions use different intensity levels, so complete beginners and experienced members train side by side in the same room. Everyone works at their own level, and a coach is there to make sure yours is right for you. You do not need to be fit to start, and you do not need to know the equipment.

A session for every kind of week

Because there are so many sessions, you can mix and match across the week rather than doing the same thing every time. A few examples:

    • Functional Fitness is our faster-paced session, with different intensity levels so beginners and experienced members train side by side.
    • Vitality is slower paced and fully coached, with controlled strength work that builds a strong foundation and core.
    • StrongHer is ladies only, with a focus on strength for every woman.
    • Legends is for over 50s, and runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 11am.
    • Mobility is an hour of flexibility, stretching and self-massage.
    • Sunday Sweat rounds off the week with a longer, sweatier workout.

You can see the full week on our timetable and book any session through the app.

    Getting here

We are based at Unit E3, Chaucer Business Park, Dittons Road, Polegate, BN26 6QH, with free parking on site. That is about six minutes from Hailsham and around twelve minutes from the centre of Eastbourne, so a session is easy to fit in before or after work.

    How to start

The way in is our 28-Day Kickstart at £149. It begins with an intro session, then gives you 28 days of unlimited small group personal training, nutrition guidance and a body composition scan, with no contract. After the 28 days, memberships start at £129 a month for 10 sessions, £149 for 15, and £179 for 30, all with the full timetable, expert coaching, a progress tracking app and optional monthly body scans.
